Energy healing has gone mainstream. When I first started walking the alternative path to healing it was reserved for crazies and hippies. This is no longer the case. This past weekend I attended an energy healing certification program at a local hospital. That’s right, the place where you go when you break your leg, need cancer treatment, or a quadruple bypass. I’m excited to report that I received my level one certification for Healing Touch®.
Energy healing has been a part of our healing process for eons. It’s only been recently that it was pushed aside in our traditional western medicine system. We’ve made many advancements, but it appears we’ve come full circle as our science catches up with human intuition. Theories of quantum physics state that reality as we know it is made up entirely of energy in its many forms, with energy fields vibrating at different frequencies. This has made it so we can’t continue to ignore this aspect of healing and wellness.
Your furniture, your dog, me, you, that tree you love, the beautiful flower, all of it is energy. The idea of a human energy field or biofield flows through philosophy, from ancient times to the present. Hands on healing, energy therapies and traditions have been used by all cultures for millennia. While there are benefits to our traditional medical system, we don’t benefit from discounting the power of energy healing or the mind-body connection. It appears that many healers also feel this way as slowly the system is beginning to incorporate alternative or integrative therapies.
Healing Touch is a relaxing, nurturing, heart-centered, biofield (energy) therapy. Gentle, intentional touch assists in balancing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It assists in creating a coherent and balanced energy field, supporting one’s inherent ability to heal. Let’s think about this for a moment. In today’s society of rushing from one point to another, to being stressed out, to staring at a TV for hours do you think it’s possible that your energy might be out of balance? Have you ever said “I feel out of balance.”? Could it be that you are actually sensing your own energy and speaking a very literal truth?
Healing Touch is classified by the National Institutes of Health as a biofield therapy and nursing intervention that contains a group of standardized, noninvasive techniques that clear, energize, and balance the human and environmental energy fields. I have to admit, at times, I feel like we are taking a beautiful healing practice, something that comes from the heart and our spirit, and turning it into a technical practice so it will be accepted by the mainstream. It’s what we’ve become used to. The structure of corporate society has instilled a certain sense of acceptance and belief in a given practice. A Procedures Manual and structure lend legitimacy, yet we can also lose the spirit of something if we’re not careful. Structures can become entrenched and resistant to change even for the betterment of humankind.
While I find myself chafing at the restrictions within the Healing Touch system, I also recognize the need for them. Healing Touch can be found in a wide variety of environments including hospitals, long-term care facilities, private practices, hospices, and spas and is taught in universities, medical and nursing schools, and other settings internationally. It’s because of its organization and standards that it’s making its way into our mainstream care system.
Healing Touch believes that in good health, energy should be moving in, through, and out of us. When there is an illness, injury, stress, or trauma our energy is not flowing as it should be. By centering in our heart and setting our intention we can then rebalance the energy and help facilitating the ability to self-heal. Everyone has this ability. Some of us have an easier time accessing the ability, but everyone can do this either for others or for themselves. However; having a healer do it for you can be a very relaxing. If you find that you can’t find a healer or afford one, this ability is available to you as well. You have the ability to self-balance and cleanse your energy.
Healing Touch is science based, but listing the many proven theories and studies would be a long post in itself. Besides science isn’t needed when you actually experience something. Sure it’s nice to give it a technical explanation and remove the mystery, but when you feel the difference after a session with an energy healer any science you receive will just help to explain what you’ve actually experienced.
This past weekend I worked with a variety of beautiful people and tried numerous healing touch techniques. I saw my first aura or energy field (my own), and focused on listening to my intuition. I spent hours in a heart-centered state. As I went through my first day of class and looked around at my classmates I realized that this was the best class I had ever taken. I was filled with the sense of being exactly where I was supposed to be. I met so many interesting, caring, people.
I don’t know if I’ll ever become a Healing Touch practitioner, but I do know that I’m an energy healer. It’s been a part of me for as long as I can remember. Now I have a better understanding of how to use it. It will be interesting to see where my journey leads me next. I love watching the pieces of my life fit together.
